Hi, I’m Alex and I look after trees in and around Bristol. I hold a Level 3 Orchard Management qualification and am currently working towards a Level 4 Diploma in Arboriculture. I’m a student member of the Arboricultural Association and the Confederation of Forest Industries, and a member of the Landworkers’ Alliance. My working practices follow the arboriculture industry code of practice as well as the guidance set out for tree work in British Standard BS3998:2010.
I have eight years experience working with fruit trees and their habitats, starting from when I first learned about the principles of organic horticulture, forest gardening and permaculture design on Shift Bristol’s Practical Sustainability Course in 2016/17.
More recently, after completing the Orchard Project’s Certificate in Community Orcharding Course in 2024, I knew I wanted to further expand my knowledge and tree management skills. This has set me on a path towards the Arboriculture L4 Diploma, which I’m expecting to achieve by the end of 2025.
I love learning more about trees every single day – and getting everyone else excited about them, too! Whether that’s by helping individuals or community groups with their trees, getting stuck into woodland management, or partnering with local organisations in order to deliver educational content.
My work is rooted in the permaculture ethics of Earth Care, People Care and Fair Share. I collaborate with individuals and community groups to create habitats in which both trees and people thrive. My particular interest is in forest gardens and perennial systems: creating and maintaining sustainable, healthy and biodiverse habitats that are productive, low-maintenance and suitable for the space. And empowering people to do this for themselves! My mission is to give everyone the confidence to create a space that is good for wildlife, good for people, productive and beautiful – whether you’re starting off with a large field, a medium-sized garden, a small patio or even just a tiny window box!
